  Zaid is very vocal and often engages in public debates raising awareness in matters of both public and national interest on the importance of preserving democracy and the rule of law in the country. He is an ardent advocate of an independent judiciary. He is also known for his pro active participation in conferences, forums and seminars, be it local or abroad such as the Widener Law Symposium on Global Democracy, Parliamentary round table discussions, World Forum 2000, UN Roundtable Dialogue on Burma, SUAHAKAM Conference on Culture & Human Rights and many more.
Zaid published his first book, "In Goodfaith," in 2007. This book is a compilation of his speeches, articles and interviews. The book was published by ZI Publications Sdn Bhd, a publishing house founded by Zaid himself to facilitate discourse on socio-political and legal conundrums in the country. ZI Publications Sdn Bhd is now owned and managed by his son, Ezra.

Dalam bab 8, bukunya yang pernah diharamkan itu, Irshad Manji turut menyentuh tentang Anwar Ibrahim.Anwar Ibrahim digambarkan sebagai model kebebasan bersuara dalam dunia Islam.Tulisnya, pada tahun 1994, Timbalan Perdana Menteri Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, memberikan ceramah di Georgetown University bertajuk “Perlunya Dialog Peradaban”. Anwar mengakui bahawa “kebodohan, ketidakadilan, korupsi, kemunafikan, dan terkikisnya kebaikan moral amat berleluasa dalam masyarakat Islam kini. “Akan tetapi,” Anwar mengingatkan, “Pelanggan media massa yang mudah ditipu masa kini akan memberi kesan bahawa dunia Islam hanya dihuni oleh para fundamentalis yang keras dan mengancam.”
